Unplug to Recharge

Sometimes you need to unplug to recharge...

Whenever I got new electronics such as smartphones or laptops, I would keep them plugged in whenever I was not using them, even if the batteries were fully charged. Even though I meant well by doing this, I noticed that the battery life of each device began to decrease. When I consulted with an expert, I was informed that I was harming them by leaving them plugged in all the time. They may have even been turned off, but because they were plugged in, energy was still flowing to them and ultimately damaging their performance.

This makes me think of a time when I lost some very important documents that I’d created on my laptop. I had been moving from one project to the next without properly saving my work and I almost never properly shut down my laptop. Eventually, my computer froze and when I restarted it, the work was gone.

Think about how often, or in how many ways you are always plugged in. You may also have many others who are plugged in to you. Literally imagine yourself as an outlet and picture all of your clients, students, constituents, patients, family members, friends or staff placing their chargers into your mind, heart and soul.

Where are you left once their energy source is replenished?

In some cases, you may be a power strip with many outlets and a surge protection feature, so you not only energize others, but also absorb the detrimental currents that would otherwise harm them.

Now, you must find a way to replenish your energy, and what do you do? You plug into something else such as social media or television, which depending on the content, can drain you even further. Like our smartphones, even when they are not in use, apps are still running in the background and thus depleting the energy of the device.

What is running in the background that you need to shut down?

This week I challenge you to find some real time to unplug. Pull out the cords that are attached to you, and unplug your cords from sources that do not serve you.

How will you unplug to recharge?
