Activate Accountability

Think about an area where you are feeling challenged and in need of growth. Common areas that I hear from clients are related to finances and fitness. I’ve found that while we are diligent when it comes to honoring our commitments to others, we often abandon our promises to ourselves. Perhaps we can leverage the integrity that we offer others to enhance our commitments to ourselves. For example, I used to spend money on all kinds of things I didn’t need. That unhelpful habit got curbed when I began working with a financial coach who reviewed my spending and income during our bi-monthly sessions. My behavior changed completely when I started working with an accountant because she actually looks at my bank statement every month. Simply knowing that I’d have to discuss or show my financial behaviors motivated me to do what was best for my business and financial goals. These powerful partnerships have helped me to keep my promises to myself. Here are a few other strategies that you might consider to support you as you activate accountability. Grow Your Gratitude. Every Thursday at 7:30am for the last three years I have gotten on a call with my Morning Mastermind Group. We begin by taking turns sharing our wins for the week. This practice has forced me to find and focus on things that I am grateful for, no matter how small. Knowing that I’ll have to share to honor my commitment to the collective allows me to pause and reflect on things that I might have otherwise taken for granted. Gamify Your Goals. Like a child with a new toy, I often lose interest in gadgets and other purchases that I thought would bring me so much joy. Surprisingly this hasn’t been the case with my Fitbit and the Peloton App. What has kept me interested over so many years is being able to win badges, hit milestones, participate in community challenges, and track my health data over time. All these components inspire me to move, stretch, or meditate daily, even if it’s only for five minutes. Family Fitness Fun. At the beginning of the year, I joined a fitness challenge with a few members of my family. We encourage one another via text daily as we engage in friendly fitness related competitions. We report out on our accomplishments at the end of each week and contribute to a cash prize for the winner at the end of each month. The cash incentive is great, but the real reward lies in being able to connect with family, and the accountability which has helped me to make choices that have drastically improved my health in just over a month of participation. This week I challenge you to activate accountability by identifying and engaging in a partnership, system, or community that taps into your intrinsic motivation. While external rewards may be a part of it, savor the internal benefits that make you want to stay connected and committed to keeping your promises to yourself. Manifestation Affirmations I am connected to an aligned community of care. I am in partnerships that support me in keeping my promises to myself. I am going after goals that ignite my soul.
