Find Your Balance

Throughout childhood and as a young adult I studied all forms of dance and gymnastics. In ballet and gymnastics, in particular, balance was the key to creating the beautiful poses that you see in pictures and on stage. The secret to the superhuman stability that you see these professionals performing is finding their center. Leaning too far off of your center in any direction will cause you to stumble or fall. Imagine an immovable cord firmly attached to something strong above you and below you, going through the middle of your being, holding you steady, no matter which way you tilt or turn. Aligning our bodies in that way was what allowed us to move through space and time successfully.

Balance is something we also strive for in our daily life. We hope to achieve it in our relationships, and between work, rest, and play. Just like in the dance and gymnastics world, the key to a balanced life lies in finding your center. What grounds you and keeps you connected to both your beliefs (above) and your foundation (below)? Think not only of an anchor to hold you down but also of something that elevates you and lifts you up at the same time. Naturally, your first thoughts may have gone to broader and more abstract things like family, friends, faith, and career. Today, I want you to consider some of the simpler strategies or activities that can get you there when those larger systems aren’t anchoring you or elevating you in the ways that you need them to.

Music. There is a musical genre for every ailment, emotion, and activity. There are sleep sounds when you need to increase rest. Inspirational music is available when you need a spiritual boost. Meditation, spa sounds, or chakra balancing music assist you when you are feeling out of alignment. Your favorite dance music allows you to shake out any energy that needs to be moved or released. Singing literally returns your brain to a state of calm after traumatic experiences.

Nature. Spending time in nature, soaking in the sights, sounds, and sunshine can help you find your center. If you want to take it to an even deeper level, place your bare feet on the earth. This simple act both absorbs and returns powerful and healing energy to help you feel grounded and connected.

Water. Water is a powerful place for manifestation and release. Spending time near or in a body of water is a prime environment for meditation and healing. When you don’t have access to that, a shower, bath, or even the warm water running over your hands as you wash dishes will give you a sense of peace, clarity, and balance. In whichever way you are immersed, imagine the water washing away any thoughts or things that no longer serve you.

This week I challenge to identify an activity that you have access to that will anchor you and elevate you simultaneously. Discover your center to find your balance.
