Inquire Within

This weekend I experienced hypnotherapy for the first time. During this session I realized that we put a lot of stock and energy into finding the answers to life’s most pressing questions outside of ourselves. We can find value and inspiration in those things, but we have a vast and powerful source of inner wisdom that we often leave untapped. Sitting still in silence and asking myself important questions gave me the answers I had been seeking. Here are a few strategies to consider as you inquire within. Consult Your Inner Council. Think of the different sides of yourself. These may include your intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual self. We often lean more heavily on one or two of these segments, and sometimes neglect other parts all together. In my session, my therapist invited me to consult each version of myself individually to see what she needed. It was fascinating how my needs became clear, as well as what was necessary to get those needs met. What questions do you have for your inner council? Conversation with a Compassionate Friend. Think of how you address a dear friend when they are faced with a challenge. We rarely communicate with ourselves with such patience, love, and kindness. One of the coaches in my group coaching community facilitated a powerful exercise where we had to share our challenge with a partner, and they read it back to us as if it was their own. We then had to give that friend words of wisdom and encouragement. In essence, we were talking to ourselves like we would talk to a friend. It was a powerful experience. What would you say, and how would you say it, if you were talking to yourself like a dear friend? Body Talk. Sociologist and Coach Martha Beck suggests using the body compass as a tool for making decisions. This simply means that as you consider a choice, you check in with your body to see how it reacts. Think about times where something you were considering triggered a physical response such as tension, an upset stomach, or sparks and tingles. That was your body compass offering guidance. What does your body say about a decision you are facing? This week I challenge you to inquire within for the answers you are seeking. You might be surprised to find that what you have been searching for has been inside of you all along. Manifestation Affirmations. I am trusting the wisdom of my body. I am conversing with myself with the compassion I would extend to a friend. I am consulting my inner council to meet my physical, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual needs.
