Let It Grow

I am a proud plant mom. My fellow plant lovers can attest to the fact that plants have emotions. I can tell when my plants are sad, and my 21-year-old, Seymour (named as such because he’s grown as big as the plant on the movie and musical, Little Shop of Horrors) had been depressed all week. So, this weekend I gave him some of the attention and care that he’d been craving. While tending to him, I noticed several limbs and leaves that were limp and lifeless. I carefully worked to remove each one and situated the survivors in the best position to soak up the sun.

When I woke up this morning, my plant baby was back to his normal state, exuding joy, strength, and vibrancy. The limbs and leaves that were affecting his growth had to be removed. As my plants continue to grow, I also have to change their environment. When I don’t transfer them to bigger pots, their roots entangle and ultimately strangle themselves in the bottom portion of the pot meant only to hold excess water. They become disconnected from the nutrient-rich soil needed to thrive.

This process is similar to the shifts I’ve made, and continue to make, in my personal and professional progression. Every time my life calls me to elevate to a new frequency, different levels of care, and work is required of me. I liken the lifeless limbs and leaves to situations and people I’ve had to release with love. Shifting to bigger pots with space for roots to grow is symbolic of my having had to move to environments that were in alignment with who I was becoming. Each time I did what I was supposed to do, I grew.

Assess Your Limbs. The stem or vine of a plant is what carries the nutrients and water to the leaves and flowers. This represents the network or industry that you are connected to. If there is a breakdown, blockage, or any other negative influence, all of the people associated are affected. Is your network or circle of influence supportive of your growth and development?

Release the Leaves. People prune roses because the fewer flowers there are on a stem, the larger and more beautiful they grow. This is because they are getting more energy from the source that they no longer have to share with all of the other flowers that were once on the stem. Who do you need to release with love to enhance your growth?

Change the Pot. As much as I loved my previous home, I received several signs that it was time for me to move on. I felt like a bird that had been in a cage for far too long that was finally able to spread its wings and fly! What environments have you outgrown? In what ways is it time for you to shift to a bigger pot so you can grow?

This week I challenge you to assess your limbs (network), leaves (people), and your pot (environment). What must change, or be let go, in order for you to grow?
