This weekend I’m pretty sure I dislocated, then relocated my knee in a matter of moments. I slid out of my favorite chair onto the floor to get my phone and I felt a pop. I tried to straighten my leg and was met with excruciating pain. As I sat there, I wondered, “Am I going to be able to get up?” Since my initial attempt at finding relief was unsuccessful, I decided to reverse my movement. I backed out of my position as if someone had pressed a rewind button. The agony ceased and my knee was back to normal. When we find ourselves up against a painful or challenging situation, we are often told to push through it. What if instead of forcing our way forward, the solution lies in taking a step back? Back That Thing Up. I loved the bumper cars at amusement parks as a child. I remember the many multi-car pile ups where several riders were clustered in a corner in such a way that no one could move. The only way for all of us to gain freedom was to back up and make space. Sometimes we are too close to a problem to see what is possible. If we back away from it and make some space, we can see it from a broader perspective. Flip It. Think about an attribute you’d like to have or increase in relation to how you view yourself and how you show up for others. Common examples are trust, confidence, or courage. Now think of a person you know who exudes that characteristic. How might you take what you observe in them and flip it to fit your situation? For example, if you are looking to trust yourself more, or to gain the trust of new clients or your audience, think of the people you trust the most. What is it about them that makes you trust them, and how might you apply those things to your circumstance? Reverse It. Imagine a minor fender bender with minimal damage. If the car hits an inanimate object like a wall or a tree, the driver doesn’t try to plow through, they must put the car in reverse to be able to move on. When we hit a figurative wall in life, taking time to reflect or revisit lessons left by history may be the more powerful path forward. This week I invite you to consider where taking a step back in your personal or professional life might be the best way forward. The answer to your advancement or acceleration may be to press rewind. Manifestation Affirmations I am making time to reflect. I am taking a step back to increase my view of what’s possible. I am consulting the wisdom of my history.
