Shoot Your Shot

Recently I was listening to a podcast that one of the young men in our family recorded with his friends. They were sharing their experiences after having completed their first year as college athletes. I was inspired by their views on discipline and their thoughts around what it takes to be at the top of your game. One of the young men was a basketball player. He talked about how if you just shoot the ball every single day, you will begin to see your skills grow, your confidence build, and you will stand out from everyone else on your team. This stuck with me so I began to think about how I might apply it to my business and my life. Every day since that day I’ve asked myself, “How can I shoot my shot?” and I’ve done at least one small thing to move my personal or professional growth forward. As I’ve been shooting my shot daily, I’ve discovered a few strategies that support this powerful practice. Tweak Your Technique. When he talked about shooting every day, he meant doing so outside of games and structured practices with the team. With the pressure of performance in practice or before an audience removed, this gives you the freedom to try and fail. This autonomy allows you to pay attention to what works and what doesn’t so that you can adjust accordingly. What is that extra thing you will do, even when you aren’t required to? Muscle Memory. When you do something so regularly and repetitively, over time, your body knows what to do independent of your mind. This has its benefits because sometimes our mindset is the only thing getting in the way or holding us back from what we are truly capable of. How might you trust and lean on the wisdom of your body? Release Results. Notice that the phrase is shoot your shot, not make the shot. This means that we are free to release our attachment to the outcome. We can simply focus on and enjoy the process. There is no score, no team to beat, and no coach to impress, it’s just you versus you. It's just like planting and tending to a garden. We don’t see the plants, flowers or fruit immediately, but we still care for it daily knowing that eventually it will grow. What outcome attachment will you release with love? This week I challenge you to shoot your shot in some small way every single day. Maybe it’s making that call or sending that text or email. Maybe it’s moving your body for just five minutes or drinking that glass of water first thing in the morning. Whatever big thing you are seeking or working toward is available to you by being broken down into the small steps that you take each day. Manifestation Affirmations I am shooting my shot every day. I am confident. I am caring for me consistently.
