Last year, I applied for a home loan for the first time in my life. I was rejected. My debt-to-income ratio was too high. I felt as though the very thing I’d done as a young adult in an attempt to make a better life was the very thing that was holding me back. Student loan debt.
When the loan company told me, “no,” this inspired me to get laser focus and as a result, I paid off a substantial amount of debt in a matter of months. With an improved credit score and debt-to-income ratio, I applied for a mortgage with another company. This time, I was so confident about the hard work I’d done, that I requested double the amount that I’d asked for from the first company.
Again, I was rejected.
As time passed and my relationship with my intended grew stronger, I realized that I didn’t have to do this alone. I shifted my focus to selling my current home and released my need to control the outcome. I activated my faith and completely trusted him to search for and find our new home. This level of surrender to someone else to secure my safe shelter is something I had not done since I was a minor living with my mother.
When I arrived at what I thought was a final walk through before closing, he surprised me with a fully furnished dream home complete with all of the amenities we would need for weeks. This breathtakingly beautiful estate was double the value that I asked for from the second lender.
Just when I thought that maybe I was asking for too much, it became clear that I wasn’t asking and believing for enough.
I was rejected so many times because I was meant to receive something greater.
This week I challenge you to reflect on the times you’ve been rejected and identify where the opportunity for greatness lives.
Shift your perception from disappointment to protection.
Accept and enjoy the gift of rejection.
